Come in parte anche i temi figurativi suggeriscono, i tre cofanetti erano a destinazione nuziale (spesso dono dello sposo alla sposa, che vi teneva i gioielli). Il primo narra sulle quattro facce la storia biblica di Susanna, come la narra il libro di Daniele (cap. 13) che ne fa un esempio di virtù, in quanto la donna resiste alle tentazioni di due vecchi scostumati; il secondo presenta amorini; il terzo, una serie di uomini e donne affrontati. Realizzati tutti e tre nell’Italia del rinascimento, il primo e il terzo, in avorio e osso naturale, sono del Quattrocento, mentre il secondo, in avorio, è del Cinquecento.

Three Renaissance caskets

As the figurative themes partly suggest, the three caskets were intended for nuptial use (often a gift from the groom to the bride, who kept her jewellery in them). The first tells the biblical story of Susanna on its four sides, as recounted in the Book of Daniel (chapter 13), which presents her as an example of virtue, as she resists the temptations of two lecherous old men; the second features cherubs; the third, a series of men and women facing each other. All three were made in Renaissance Italy. The first and third, in ivory and natural bone, date from the 15th century, while the second, in ivory, is from the 16th century.
