Le scene, incise a bulino forse da un orafo mantovano, raffigurano: Cristo davanti a Pilato, la flagellazione, la salita al calvario, la crocifissione, la deposizione nel sepolcro, la risurrezione. All’epoca era raro, ma per questo rilevante, che la sequenza della Passione si chiudesse correttamente con la Risurrezione; un caso analogo si riscontra nei gruppi lignei di Ostiano, visibili in altra sala del Museo. I medaglioni, pare appartenuti al cardinale Sigismondo Gonzaga e da lui passati al nipote cardinale Ercole, dopo quest’ultimo sono pervenuti al Capitolo della Cattedrale. In anni recenti vi sono stati rilevati rapporti stilistici con opere di Andrea Mantegna, e in quest’ottica sono stati esposti alla mostra sul Mantegna allestita nel 2008-2009 al Museo del Louvre (Parigi).

Six medallions depicting scenes from the Passion and Resurrection

The scenes, engraved with a burin, possibly by a goldsmith from Mantua, depict: Christ before Pilate, the flagellation, the ascent to Calvary, the crucifixion, the deposition in the tomb, and the resurrection. At the time, it was rare, but therefore significant, for the Passion sequence to end correctly with the Resurrection; a similar case can be found in the wooden groups from Ostiano, on display in another room of the Museum. The medallions, which apparently belonged to Cardinal Sigismondo Gonzaga and were passed on by him to his nephew Cardinal Ercole, were later donated to the Cathedral Chapter. In recent years, stylistic similarities with works by Andrea Mantegna have been noted, and with this in mind, they were exhibited at the Mantegna exhibition held in 2008-2009 at the Louvre Museum (Paris).
