Il dipinto è una pregevole copia dell’originale, oggi nella milanese Collezione Koelliker, realizzato da Francesco Cairo, uno dei più stimati pittori barocchi di Milano. L’episodio evangelico della fuga in Egitto (Matteo 2,13-15), frequente all’epoca (ispirò anche, tra gli altri, Annibale Carracci e Caravaggio), è qui elaborato con l’ipotesi che la Sacra Famiglia abbia compiuto una sosta, durante la quale Giuseppe dimostra le sue sollecitudini per la famiglia, raccogliendo frutti per Maria e il Bambino.

The painting is a valuable copy of the original, now in the Koelliker Collection in Milan, created by Francesco Cairo, one of Milan's most esteemed Baroque painters. The Gospel episode of the Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15), a frequent subject at the time (it also inspired Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio, among others), is elaborated here with the hypothesis that the Holy Family made a stop, during which Joseph demonstrates his concern for his family by gathering fruit for Mary and the Child.
