Le eleganti forme rinascimentali di questo manufatto d’oro massiccio si completano con due medaglioncini (custoditi a parte, per rispetto) da appendere ai gancetti centrali, in cui sono rinchiuse minuscole porzioni della reliquia mantovana per eccellenza, il Preziosissimo Sangue di Gesù, venerato nella basilica di Sant’Andrea. Il reliquiario è stato voluto dal duca Guglielmo, al fine di arricchire la basilica palatina anche con la prestigiosa reliquia; per qualche tempo esso fu collocato sotto la mensa dell’altare maggiore, dentro l’urna che sta al centro della sala.

Reliquary of the Precious Blood

The elegant Renaissance forms of this solid gold artefact are complemented by two small medallions (kept separately, out of respect) to be hung on the central hooks, which contain tiny portions of Mantua's most precious relic, the Precious Blood of Jesus, venerated in the Basilica of Sant'Andrea. The reliquary was commissioned by Duke Guglielmo in order to enrich the palatine basilica with this prestigious relic; for some time it was placed under the altar table, inside the urn in the centre of the hall.

At the time of Duke William's reliquary, this was the form of the reliquaries kept in the crypt of the Basilica of St. Andrew. The painting can be seen in another room of the Museum.
