E’ questa l’unica opera certa di un pittore poco noto, attivo a Mantova dal 1680 al 1717. Il soggetto, pur frequentemente rappresentato, non deriva dai Vangeli ispirati ma dall’apocrifo Protovangelo di Giacomo, e presenta un episodio storicamente inverosimile, tuttavia oggetto di viva devozione specie presso i cristiani orientali. La liturgia lo celebra il 21 Novembre, nel significato che Maria si è donata totalmente a Dio sin dalla più tenera età.

This is the only known work by a little-known painter who was active in Mantua from 1680 to 1717. The subject, although frequently depicted, does not derive from the inspired Gospels but from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, and presents an episode that is historically implausible, yet the object of lively devotion, especially among Eastern Christians. The liturgy celebrates it on 21 November, in the sense that Mary gave herself totally to God from an early age.
