La tavola si ritiene opera di un pittore veneto: il paesaggio evoca quello della regione, mentre il tratteggio dorato delle vesti e della capanna ricorda le icone bizantine (sono noti gli abituali rapporti di Venezia con il vicino oriente). La scena, immersa in una sorta di incantato silenzio, singolarmente è presentata in piena luce diurna. Giuseppe, che ha accanto gli strumenti della sua professione, ha gli occhi chiusi, a significare che è intento ad ascoltare le ispirazioni divine di cui parla il vangelo. In alto, tre angeli cantano il Gloria, mentre un altro annuncia ai pastori la nascita del Salvatore.

The panel is believed to be the work of a Venetian painter: the landscape evokes that of the region, while the golden hatching of the clothes and the hut is reminiscent of Byzantine icons (Venice's usual relations with the Near East are well known). The scene, immersed in a sort of enchanted silence, is singularly presented in full daylight. Joseph, who has the tools of his trade beside him, has his eyes closed, signifying that he is intent on listening to the divine inspirations spoken of in the Gospel. Above, three angels sing the Gloria, while another announces the birth of the Saviour to the shepherds.
