Coppa con coperchio realizzata in Germania, probabilmente a Norimberga dove è noto siano state modellate opere simili, che la forma a lobi avvicina a quella del fiore di aquilegia. Nata per usi profani, come dimostrano i soggetti delle decorazioni a sbalzo cesellate (sirene, putti, busti femminili e una testa di uomo barbuto), quando dai Gonzaga fu donata alla Cattedrale fu destinata a contenere la porzione della reliquia del Preziosissimo Sangue da secoli custodita a parte rispetto a quella della basilica di Sant’Andrea. Per segnalare la presenza del sacro reperto fu allora aggiunta la crocetta apicale.

Columbine cup

Cup with lid made in Germany, probably in Nuremberg, where similar works are known to have been modelled, whose lobed shape resembles that of a columbine flower. Originally intended for secular use, as evidenced by the subjects of the embossed decorations (mermaids, cherubs, female busts and a bearded man's head), when it was donated to the Cathedral by the Gonzaga family, it was intended to contain the portion of the Precious Blood relic that had been kept separately from that of the Basilica of St. Andrew for centuries. The small cross at the top was then added to indicate the presence of the sacred relic.
