Madreperla, oro, argento dorato, smalti, gemme e perle; 1533-1534

La cassetta, realizzata a Parigi da un orafo del re Francesco I e forse creata per contenere doni nuziali, si tramanda facesse parte dei preziosi che il re di Francia Enrico IV donò al Venerabile Francesco Gonzaga vescovo di Mantova, al termine della sua missione come nunzio apostolico e maggiore artefice della pace di Vervins (1598) tra la Francia e la Spagna. La struttura lignea del manufatto è rivestita di lamine di madreperla, fissate con borchie d’oro in forma di giglio di Francia, e tra gli altri ornamenti presenta dieci finissimi ritratti clipeati (cioè sporgenti da un cerchio) all’uso dell’antica Roma.

The box, made in Paris by a goldsmith of King Francis I and perhaps created to hold wedding gifts, is said to have been part of the treasures that King Henry IV of France gave to the Venerable Francesco Gonzaga, Bishop of Mantua, at the end of his mission as apostolic nuncio and chief architect of the Peace of Vervins (1598) between France and Spain. The wooden structure of the artefact is covered with mother-of-pearl sheets, fixed with gold studs in the shape of the French lily, and among other ornaments features ten very fine clipeate portraits (i.e. protruding from a circle) in the style of ancient Rome.
