La tela è stata realizzata per l’oratorio dell’antico ospedale di Ostiglia, intitolato a Sant’Antonio abate: di qui la presenza nella composizione del santo eremita, cui si accompagna quella di San Sebastiano, spesso invocato contro le malattie, ed in special modo contro la peste. Anacronisticamente le due figure inquadrano il racconto della Natività, sviluppato in tre momenti. In primo piano il gruppo essenziale del Neonato adagiato sul manto della Madre in preghiera, mentre Giuseppe volge lo sguardo a recepire le disposizioni divine e in alto gli angeli cantano il Gloria. In secondo piano, un altro angelo dà l’annuncio ai pastori, e intanto sullo sfondo si apprestano a partire i Magi: qui, caso unico, immaginati giungere via mare.

Nativity with Saints Anthony and Sebastian

The canvas was created for the oratory of the ancient hospital of Ostiglia, dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot: hence the presence in the composition of the hermit saint, accompanied by Saint Sebastian, often invoked against diseases, and especially against the plague. Anachronistically, the two figures frame the story of the Nativity, developed in three moments. In the foreground is the essential group of the Newborn lying on the mantle of his Mother in prayer, while Joseph looks up to receive the divine instructions and above, the angels sing the Gloria. In the background, another angel announces the news to the shepherds, while in the background the Magi are preparing to leave: here, in a unique case, they are imagined arriving by sea.
