Si affronta qui il discusso tema teologico della cooperazione di Maria alla redenzione compiuta dal Figlio. Maria, secondo tradizione designata dal crescente lunare come l’Immacolata, schiaccia il mostro simbolo del demonio, ma lo può fare per opera di Gesù, il quale sta per trafiggere il mostro e dà efficacia al gesto della Madre sovrapponendo il proprio piede al suo.

Questo soggetto è stato raffigurato anche, tra gli altri, da Caravaggio nella Madonna dei palafrenieri (Roma, Galleria Borghese).

The Immaculate Conception with the Child Jesus

This painting addresses the controversial theological theme of Mary's cooperation in the redemption accomplished by her Son. Mary, traditionally designated by the crescent moon as the Immaculate Conception, crushes the monster symbolising the devil, but she is able to do so through the work of Jesus, who is about to pierce the monster and makes his Mother's gesture effective by placing his foot on hers.

This subject has also been depicted by Caravaggio, among others, in his Madonna of the Palafrenieri (Rome, Galleria Borghese).
