Inv. 26. Dalla chiesa parrocchiale di San Barnaba in Mantova.

Il dipinto, di incerta attribuzione (alcuni lo riferiscono a Nicolò da Verona, attivo a Mantova nella seconda metà del secolo, altri ad un anonimo, autore di una tavola con la Madonna degli angeli conservata a Palazzo d’Arco), presenta caratteri di transizione dal gotico al rinascimento. Sullo sfondo di un ampio paesaggio collinare con castelli e un mulino, il santo è presentato sulla scorta di quanto riferisce il vangelo: la figura austera indossa un “vestito di peli di cammello”, è collocata sulla riva del fiume (il Giordano) dove impartiva “un battesimo di penitenza” e regge un cartiglio con la scritta Ego vox clamantis, “Io (sono) voce di uno che grida”, sottintendendo il seguito: “Nel deserto: Preparate la via del Signore”. La croce che innalza con la destra allude al fatto che il Battista ha designato Gesù come l’Agnello di Dio, preannunciando il suo sacrificio redentore.

Saint John the Baptist

The painting, of uncertain attribution (some attribute it to Nicolò da Verona, active in Mantua in the second half of the century, others to an anonymous artist, author of a panel depicting the Madonna degli Angeli preserved in Palazzo d'Arco), shows characteristics of transition from Gothic to Renaissance. Against the backdrop of a vast hilly landscape with castles and a mill, the saint is presented as described in the Gospel: the austere figure wears a “camel hair garment” and stands on the bank of the river (the Jordan) where he administered “a baptism of repentance” and holds a scroll with the inscription Ego vox clamantis, 'I (am) the voice of one crying', implying the following: “In the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord”. The cross he raises with his right hand alludes to the fact that the Baptist designated Jesus as the Lamb of God, foreshadowing his redemptive sacrifice.
