La preziosa tavoletta, ancora nella sua cornice originale, è tra le opere principali dell’artista  ferrarese, nella fase in cui egli fu influenzato dalla coeva pittura fiorentina. L’atteggiamento delle figure, col Figlio in atto di benedire la Madre in preghiera, le distacca dalla tradizionale raffigurazione di questo soggetto, mentre la mela sul davanzale lo approfondisce: essa allude infatti al frutto proibito del peccato originale che, entrando nel mondo tramite Maria, il Figlio di Dio è venuto a redimere.

This precious panel, still in its original frame, is one of the most important works by the Ferrara artist, dating from the period when he was influenced by contemporary Florentine painting. The posture of the figures, with the Son blessing the Mother in prayer, sets them apart from the traditional depiction of this subject, while the apple on the windowsill deepens it: it alludes to the forbidden fruit of original sin which, entering the world through Mary, the Son of God came to redeem.
