Le due statuette hanno paralleli in opere francesi del Trecento, che a loro volta richiamano due “tipi” dell’iconografia orientale. La prima, con la Madre e il Figlio che si guardano con affetto, ricorda la Madonna detta eleoùsa (o della tenerezza); l’altra, con le due figure che guardano i fedeli, suggerisce la odigitria (Maria presenta Gesù come la Via al cielo).

The two statuettes have parallels in 14th-century French works, which in turn recall two “types” of Eastern iconography. The first, with the Mother and Son looking at each other affectionately, is reminiscent of the Madonna known as eleoùsa (or of tenderness); the other, with the two figures looking at the faithful, suggests the odigitria (Mary presents Jesus as the Way to heaven).
