Secondo tradizione, questa è una delle tre pressoché identiche immagini che la marchesa Marta Tana Gonzaga, madre del futuro San Luigi, fece realizzare nell’imminenza della sua beatificazione (1605) per distribuirle in ciascuno dei tre centri principali (Castiglione delle Stiviere, Medole e Castel Goffredo) del marchesato, cui egli aveva rinunciato per entrare nella Compagnia di Gesù. Le prime due sono ancora nei luoghi citati; questa è passata, in tempi imprecisati, in mani private, donde per donazione al parroco di Santa Maria degli Angeli, il quale a sua volta la donò alla diocesi. Il ritratto presenta Luigi con l’aureola a raggera propria dei beati; la corona marchionale che gli sarebbe spettata è negletta in un canto, ma in cambio – delicato tocco in cui si avverte la tenerezza della madre – egli riceve una corona dal cielo, e non a caso una corona di fiori d’arancio.

According to tradition, this is one of three almost identical images that Marquise Marta Tana Gonzaga, mother of the future Saint Luigi, had made on the eve of his beatification (1605) to be distributed in each of the three main centres (Castiglione delle Stiviere, Medole and Castel Goffredo) of the marquisate, which he had renounced to join the Society of Jesus. The first two are still in the places mentioned; this one passed into private hands at an unknown date, whence it was donated to the parish priest of Santa Maria degli Angeli, who in turn donated it to the diocese. The portrait shows Luigi with the halo typical of the blessed; the marquis's crown that would have been his is neglected in a corner, but in exchange - a delicate touch in which the tenderness of his mother can be felt - he receives a crown from heaven, and not by chance a crown of orange blossoms.
