La vetrina accoglie due opere, di stile differente ma entrambe di straordinaria bellezza, che bastano ad attestare le qualità di Giovanni Bellavite (1739-1821), nato a Verona ma dal 1766 attivo a Mantova come orafo e docente all’Accademia. Entrambe le opere sono state commissionate per la cattedrale dal personaggio ritratto qui accanto, Giovanni Battista de Pergen, vescovo di Mantova dal 1770 al 1807. Le ampolline per la Messa (1776) sono in argento dorato, sbalzato e cesellato, e distinguono il contenuto con il rilievo del coperchio: una fonte per l’acqua, un grappolo d’uva per il vino. La statuetta del Risorto (c. 1790), in bronzo dorato, fu collocata sopra il tabernacolo della cappella del Santissimo Sacramento; rubata intorno al 1970, dopo alcuni anni il ladro la restituì.

The showcase hosts two works, of different styles but both of extraordinary beauty, which suffice to attest to the qualities of Giovanni Bellavite (1739-1821), born in Verona but active in Mantua from 1766 as a goldsmith and teacher at the Academy. Both works were commissioned for the cathedral by the person portrayed here, Giovanni Battista de Pergen, bishop of Mantua from 1770 to 1807. The small cruets for the Mass (1776) are made of gilded, embossed and chiselled silver and distinguish the contents with the relief on the lid: a spring for water, a bunch of grapes for wine. The statuette of the Risen One (c. 1790), made of gilded bronze, was placed above the tabernacle of the Blessed Sacrament chapel; stolen around 1970, it was returned by the thief after a few years.
