Sono qui riunite opere relative alla reliquia denominata Preziosissimo Sangue di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, venerata nella basilica di Sant’Andrea. Essa presenta, entro due reliquiari di cristallo e oro detti Sacri Vasi, grumi di terra imbevuta di sangue, che secondo tradizione sarebbe stata raccolta ai piedi della Croce e portata a Mantova da Longino, il soldato che trafisse il costato di Gesù. I Sacri Vasi raffigurati nelle opere qui raccolte presentano le forme antiche, quella in uso sin verso il 1540 e quella più raffinata attribuita a Benvenuto Cellini.

PRECIOUS HALL
Here are works related to the relic called Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, venerated in the Basilica of St. Andrew. It presents, within two crystal and gold reliquaries called Sacred Vases, lumps of earth soaked in blood, which according to tradition was collected at the foot of the Cross and brought to Mantua by Longinus, the soldier who pierced Jesus' side. The Sacred Vases depicted in the works collected here present the ancient forms, the one in use since around 1540 and the more refined one attributed to Benvenuto Cellini.

L’opera viene esposta per testimoniare come la devozione al Preziosissimo Sangue e di conseguenza il culto a san Longino siano ancora ai nostri giorni una fonte di ispirazione per gli artisti. Ennio Bencini, di origini toscane, opera dagli anni Ottanta ed ha realizzato più di un centinaio di esposizioni personali in Italia e all’estero. Ha partecipato nel 2011 alla Biennale di Venezia. In occasione dell’esposizione presso il museo avvenuta nel 2008, lasciandosi coinvolgere dalla storia e dalla cultura mantovana ha voluto omaggiare la figura di san Longino.
L’opera, pur nell’astrattezza delle forme, allude chiaramente al Sangue versato per la Redenzione del genere umano.

The work is exhibited to testify how the devotion to the Precious Blood and consequently the cult to Saint Longinus are still a source of inspiration for artists in our days. Tuscan-born Ennio Bencini has been working since the 1980s and has held more than a hundred solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He participated in the 2011 Venice Biennale. On the occasion of his exhibition at the museum in 2008, he allowed himself to be involved in the history and culture of Mantua and paid homage to the figure of Saint Longinus.
The work, although abstract in form, clearly alludes to the Blood shed for the Redemption of mankind.
