Il dipinto, sconosciuto prima del suo ingresso nel Museo, provienente da una collezione privata, si ritiene raffiguri San Francesco di Paola, specie a motivo delle tre lettere A, I e S che si intravedono sul bastone e verosimilmente rimandano alla parola Charitas, che del santo era l’emblema.
Il santo nacque a Paola (Cosenza) nel 1416; eremita, si vide forzato dai numerosi seguaci a fondare l’ordine dei Minimi; famoso taumaturgo, fu chiamato al capezzale del morente Luigi XI re di Francia, e in Francia, presso Tours, nel 1507 concluse la sua vita terrena.

The painting, unknown prior to its arrival in the museum and coming from a private collection, is believed to depict St. Francis of Paola, especially because of the three letters A, I and S that can be glimpsed on the staff and probably refer to the word Charitas, which was the saint's emblem.

The saint was born in Paola (Cosenza) in 1416; a hermit, he was forced by his numerous followers to found the Order of Minims; a famous thaumaturge, he was called to the bedside of the dying Louis XI, King of France, and in France, near Tours, in 1507 he ended his earthly life.
