Saletta del Preziosissimo

Sono qui riunite opere relative alla reliquia denominata Preziosissimo Sangue di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, venerata nella basilica di Sant’Andrea. Essa presenta, entro due reliquiari di cristallo e oro detti Sacri Vasi, grumi di terra imbevuta di sangue, che secondo tradizione sarebbe stata raccolta ai piedi della Croce e portata a Mantova da Longino, il soldato che trafisse il costato di Gesù. I Sacri Vasi raffigurati nelle opere qui raccolte presentano le forme antiche, quella in uso sin verso il 1540 e quella più raffinata attribuita a Benvenuto Cellini.

Here are collected works related to the relic called Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, venerated in the Basilica of St. Andrew. It presents, within two crystal and gold reliquaries called Sacred Vases, lumps of earth soaked in blood, which according to tradition was collected at the foot of the Cross and brought to Mantua by Longinus, the soldier who pierced Jesus' side. The Sacred Vases depicted in the works collected here present the ancient forms, the one in use since around 1540 and the more refined one attributed to Benvenuto Cellini.

Composizione devozionale, come attesta la scritta sottostante nella parte ancora leggibile: “Sia in eterno benedetto et adorato il Pretiosissimo Sangue di Giesucristo nostro Redentore”. I due reliquiari, nella forma ideata da Cellini, sono esposti alla venerazione entro un alone di luce, attorniati da quattro tondi entro cui sono raffigurati: in alto, la scena dell’Annunciazione; in basso, le anime del purgatorio con un angelo venuto a portarle in paradiso; a sinistra, San Longino; a destra, Sant’Antonio di Padova.

Devotional composition, as attested by the inscription below in the still legible part: ‘May the Precious Blood of our Redeemer Jesus Christ be eternally blessed and adored’. The two reliquaries, in the form conceived by Cellini, are exposed to veneration within a halo of light, surrounded by four tondi within which are depicted: above, the scene of the Annunciation; below, the souls in purgatory with an angel come to take them to paradise; on the left, St. Longinus; on the right, St. Anthony of Padua.
