Inv. 243. Dalla chiesa di Frassino

Con questa scultura gotica si passa, nella rassegna del Museo, agli esordi della lunga signoria dei Gonzaga (1328-1707). Si presume che la statua fosse accompagnata da quella raffigurante l’arcangelo Gabriele, per comporre insieme la scena evangelica dell’Annunciazione. Che questa raffiguri la Vergine Maria nel momento in cui le viene detto di essere stata scelta da Dio come Madre del suo Figlio, si deduce dall’espressione di sorpresa e dall’umiltà dell’atteggiamento (si ritrae e, con la mano sul petto, sembra dire: “Chi, proprio io?”). Lo attesta inoltre il libro che regge con la sinistra: benché il vangelo non lo dica, molto spesso gli artisti hanno raffigurato l’Annunciata con un libro accanto o mentre lo sta leggendo, per significare che ella conosceva la profezia (“Ecco: la vergine concepirà e partorirà un figlio, che chiamerà Emmanuele, Dio-con-noi” Is 7,14); la sorpresa derivava dall’apprendere che la profezia si riferisse a lei.

With this Gothic sculpture we move in the Museum's exhibition to the beginnings of the long Gonzaga seigniory (1328-1707). It is assumed that the statue was accompanied by one depicting the archangel Gabriel, to compose together the evangelical scene of the Annunciation. That this depicts the Virgin Mary at the moment when she is told that she has been chosen by God to be the Mother of his Son can be deduced from the expression of surprise and the humility of her attitude (she withdraws and, with her hand on her breast, seems to say: ‘Who, me?’). This is also attested by the book she holds in her left hand: although the Gospel does not say so, very often artists have depicted the Annunciation with a book beside her or while she is reading it, to signify that she knew the prophecy (‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, whom she will call Emmanuel, God-with-us’ Is 7:14); the surprise derived from learning that the prophecy referred to her.
