Inv. 235. Dalla Cattedrale

Nel X secolo il centro episcopale, compresa la cattedrale di San Paolo, fu devastato da un incendio. Con la ricostruzione, avvenuta nel secolo seguente, cattedrale divenne la parallela chiesa di San Pietro, in seguito più volte modificata. Dei costrutti romanici restano vistose tracce nella muratura e, unico elemento ornamentale, questo capitello, ritenuto opera di un artista della cerchia di Wiligelmo il creatore della scultura romanica che negli ultimi decenni del dominio di Matilde operò a Modena (e, con i suoi collaboratori e seguaci, in altre aree dell’Emilia e della bassa Lombardia).

In the 10th century, the episcopal centre, including St. Paul's Cathedral, was devastated by fire. When it was rebuilt in the following century, the cathedral became the parallel Church of St. Peter, later modified several times. Conspicuous traces of the Romanesque buildings remain in the masonry and, the only ornamental element, this capital, believed to be the work of an artist from the circle of Wiligelmo the creator of Romanesque sculpture who worked in Modena (and, with his collaborators and followers, in other areas of Emilia and lower Lombardy) in the last decades of Matilda's rule.
