Il soggetto di questa tela è inconsueto. La corona di stelle intorno al capo di Maria la individua come l’Immacolata: poiché ella era tale sin dal concepimento, quindi prima della sua maternità, abitualmente è raffigurata senza il Bambino. Peraltro ella è stata preservata dal peccato originale proprio in vista della sua divina Maternità; presentandola col Figlio, forse è proprio questo che l’artista intendeva richiamare.

The subject of this canvas is unusual. The crown of stars around Mary's head identifies her as the Immaculate Virgin: since she was such from conception, thus before her maternity, she is usually depicted without the Child. Moreover, she was preserved from original sin precisely in view of her divine Motherhood; by presenting her with the Son, perhaps this is precisely what the artist intended.
