Forse ispirato dal proprio nome, Bazzani aveva San Giuseppe tra i soggetti ricorrenti delle sue tele. Qui, in uno stile che ricorda Rubens (il quale era stato pittore di corte presso i Gonzaga e aveva lasciato a Mantova varie opere), l’ha raffigurato abbracciare teneramente un Gesù ancora infante, del quale per la legge umana era il padre, e per disposizione divina il protettivo custode.

Perhaps inspired by his own name, Bazzani had Saint Joseph among the recurring subjects of his canvases. Here, in a style reminiscent of Rubens (who had been court painter to the Gonzagas and had left several works in Mantua), he depicted him tenderly embracing a still infant Jesus, of whom by human law he was the father, and by divine disposition the protective guardian.
