L’opera fu commissionata dal Monte di Pietà di Mantova, uno degli istituti di carità con i quali Bazzani ebbe spesso diretti rapporti. La vivace gestualità delle figure e l’impostazione della scena a piani obliqui tra loro perpendicolari sono esemplari nell’esprimere il movimento, fisico e psicologico, richiesto dal soggetto: gli apostoli costatano con stupore il sepolcro vuoto, sollevando il lenzuolo in cui era avvolto il corpo di Maria che sale al cielo, attratta dalla luce divina.

The work was commissioned by the Monte di Pietà of Mantua, one of the charitable institutions with which Bazzani often had direct dealings. The lively gestures of the figures and the setting of the scene with oblique planes at right angles to each other are exemplary in expressing the movement, both physical and psychological, required by the subject: the apostles gaze in astonishment at the empty tomb, lifting the sheet in which the body of Mary was wrapped as she ascends to heaven, attracted by the divine light.
