Saletta del Preziosissimo
Sono qui riunite opere relative alla reliquia denominata Preziosissimo Sangue di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, venerata nella basilica di Sant’Andrea. Essa presenta, entro due reliquiari di cristallo e oro detti Sacri Vasi, grumi di terra imbevuta di sangue, che secondo tradizione sarebbe stata raccolta ai piedi della Croce e portata a Mantova da Longino, il soldato che trafisse il costato di Gesù. I Sacri Vasi raffigurati nelle opere qui raccolte presentano le forme antiche, quella in uso sin verso il 1540 e quella più raffinata attribuita a Benvenuto Cellini.

Il dipinto, malgrado le modeste qualità artistiche e l’oscura valenza di alcuni particolari (l’aquila con la spada e la fortezza oltre il fiume, in cui non si riconosce nessun costrutto noto), è interessante perché riunisce le principali devozioni mantovane: il Preziosissimo Sangue, con i due reliquiari antichi; Sant’Anselmo, patrono della città e della diocesi. Egli pare qui presentato nel noto episodio che lo vede invocare la protezione della Vergine su Mantova. L’episodio è raffigurato in un dipinto di Borgani presente nel Museo e si collega alla venerazione tuttora viva nel santuario dell’Incoronata annesso alla cattedrale.

Gathered here are works relating to the relic called Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, venerated in the Basilica of St Andrew. It presents, within two crystal and gold reliquaries called Sacred Vases, lumps of earth soaked in blood, which according to tradition was collected at the foot of the Cross and brought to Mantua by Longinus, the soldier who pierced Jesus' side. The Sacred Vases depicted in the works collected here present the ancient forms, the one in use since around 1540 and the more refined one attributed to Benvenuto Cellini.
Mantuan Devotions

The painting, despite its modest artistic quality and the obscure value of some details (the eagle with the sword and the fortress beyond the river, in which no known construct can be recognised), is interesting because it brings together the main Mantuan devotions: the Precious Blood, with the two ancient reliquaries; St. Anselm, patron of the city and diocese. He appears here in the well-known episode in which he invokes the Virgin's protection over Mantua. The episode is depicted in a painting by Borgani in the museum and is linked to the veneration still alive today in the sanctuary of the Incoronata attached to the cathedral.
