“All’ultimo momento dell’attività di Bazzani si deve questo intenso dipinto; (…) la materia disfatta e i colori cupi, bruni, violacei, verdastri, accrescono in modo espressionistico il senso di tragedia che incombe sulla scena” (R. Berzaghi).
La scena è quella, immaginata dalla pietà cristiana, della caduta di Gesù sotto il peso della croce; l’artista a sua volta immagina che in quel momento gli si siano accostati un uomo e una donna, a confortarlo almeno con la loro partecipazione alla sua sofferenza. Piace pensare che i due siano la Madre e il discepolo prediletto, Giovanni: tra i pochi amici che hanno seguito Gesù sino al calvario, sono i due che negli spasimi dell’agonia egli ha legato, a sé e tra di loro, con un vincolo d’amore (v. vangelo secondo Giovanni 19,25-27).

‘We owe this intense painting to the last moment of Bazzani's activity; (...) the undone material and the dark, brown, violet and greenish colours expressively heighten the sense of tragedy looming over the scene’ (R. Berzaghi).

The scene is the one, imagined by Christian piety, of Jesus' fall under the weight of the cross; the artist in turn imagines that at that moment a man and a woman approached him, to comfort him at least by their participation in his suffering. The artist likes to think that the two are the Mother and the beloved disciple, John: among the few friends who followed Jesus to Calvary, they are the two who, in the agonies of agony, he bound to himself and to each other with a bond of love (see the Gospel according to John 19:25-27).
